A fatal railway accident in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has resulted in the deaths of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive opposition criticisms regarding the pace and handling of the country's key infrastructure initiatives.
The crash occurred on the Interoceanic Corridor train, a route developed to connect the Atlantic and Pacific Ocean across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was designed to provide an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, intended to promote economic development in the area.
“We shall meticulously determine what caused this accident,” declared the country's president.
The leader confirmed that, of the some 250 passengers on board, another 98 were wounded, with five of those in grave condition. The leader added plans to visit Oaxaca to confer with those affected.
Key Undertaking of Former Government
The Interoceanic Train was a central development scheme of the previous administration, whose term finished the prior year. This rail line was closely associated with his administration's economic agenda for the southeastern region.
Another multi-billion dollar rail project from that time, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also integral to the broader strategy to revitalize the economy of a comparatively less developed part of the country.
Building Management and Safety Concerns
The development of both rail lines was supervised by the army, marking a significant increase of its responsibilities in national projects. They were executed at an accelerated speed, defying forecasts to be partially opened before the end of that administration.
However, this accelerated timeline had simultaneously sparked ongoing concerns over safety standards.
- Sunday's derailment was the third such incident on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
- This includes an earlier accident this month when a train struck a truck at a railroad crossing.
- The other major rail project has also seen several non-deadly derailments.
Demands for Review and Suspension
In the aftermath of the disaster, the leader of a key rival party demanded an prompt suspension in the building and running of all comparable projects.
This halt was requested pending a full safety audit. The party stated that the loss of life "calls for immediate answers."
In response, the president maintained that the train had been running in full adherence to all security protocols. Commitments were given that the government would continue to be "accountable" in both the construction and operation of these vital initiatives.
