Afghan Rulers Utilized Abandoned British Gear to Find Local Nationals That Served With Western Forces, Investigation Hears

A whistleblower has told the Afghan leak inquiry that British authorities left behind confidential devices permitting the Taliban to locate local individuals that had served with western forces.

Information Leak Puts Numerous at Risk

Person A, identified as Person A, stated that people concerned by the information breach were advised to relocate and change their phone numbers to ensure their safety from the ruling authorities.

Members of Parliament are looking into the UK government's management of a massive leak of private information concerning approximately 19k Afghans who had asked to relocate to the UK to escape the Taliban.

How the Leak Occurred

A data file containing private information, including identities, phone numbers and sometimes household data, was mistakenly released by a staff member stationed at British military command in last year.

The breach was discovered only in August 2023, when the names of several individuals who had sought to settle in Britain were posted on Facebook.

Taliban Capabilities

It appears there is a false assumption that militant forces lack comparable resources that western nations possess,” the whistleblower testified to lawmakers.

Technology was deserted in Afghanistan; they possess it. Once they acquire mobile details, they can locate your exact position. This is exactly how intelligence groups did.”

During testimony about whether the Taliban possessed sophisticated technology, the whistleblower confirmed: “They possess all resources.”

Impact of the Data Breach

Preliminary research presented to the investigation suggested that no fewer than forty-nine relatives and co-workers of people concerned by the incident had been executed.

A gag order about the incident was enacted in August 2023 and blocked all details regarding the matter from media reporting until recently.

Security Recommendations

Because she was restricted, the whistleblower and the volunteer organization she collaborated with advised affected households they were assisting that they had “apprehensions that somebody's phone had been compromised”.

“We recommended that they relocate where feasible and switched their phone numbers. These represented the crucial data that, should militant forces had access to such data, would result in them being traced,” the source testified.

Challenged Assessments

The whistleblower argued that an official review conducted by an ex-government employee had been wrong to determine that the acquisition of the records by militant forces was “minimally impact present danger”.

“The thing to remember is that these individuals are in hiding from the Taliban; they remain concealed. The primary issue involves former occupations.”

She detailed horrific abuse suffered by concerned people, involving electrocution, simulated drowning, and physical abuse.

“We have had toddlers who have had bones crushed to pressure households to say where someone is,” the whistleblower revealed.
