The English seamer added to England's injury problems after leaving the field on the second morning of the fourth Ashes Test in the Ashes series. Atkinson experienced discomfort in his hamstring post-delivery of the fourth over at the MCG. The touring camp stated the 27-year-old reported "discomfort" and would spend time away from the action for further assessment "in the coming hours". The series decider of the series at the SCG gets underway on Sunday, 4 January. The English side has previously lost fast bowlers one seamer due to knee trouble and Jofra Archer with an abdominal strain on this Ashes tour. A replacement bowler was called up to provide backup. Atkinson struggled in the opening two Tests, claiming a mere three wickets. He was omitted of the third Test, only to be brought back for the fourth Test in the playing XI. Surrey's Atkinson showed better form in Melbourne, bagging two scalps during the host's first knock, then making 28 as a batsman as one of just three England players to reach double figures. Post a single over late on the first day, he returned the next day and dismissed the nightwatchman Scott Boland caught behind. Yet, on the final ball of that over, he bowled a slower ball to Travis Head and promptly felt at his leg. Atkinson was brought back for the Melbourne match following his omission of the third.
