Patients Coming Off Weight-Loss Jabs Gain Back Pounds Four Times Faster Compared to People Using Diet and Exercise

Obesity treatment involves ongoing approaches.

New research suggests that people who discontinue popular weight-loss injections like Mounjaro or Wegovy may regain lost weight far faster than those who end conventional lifestyle regimens.

Findings released in a major medical journal shows that while overweight individuals frequently drop about a fifth of their total mass while using the jabs, the mass returns at an average rate of 0.8 kg per month upon discontinuation.

"Users buying these medications must be aware of the danger of fast rebound weight gain when the therapy is stopped," warns lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.

This pace of regain implies a reversion to original weight within about a year and a half.

Weighing Therapies

The analysis, which examined dozens of trials involving thousands of participants, contrasted the outcomes of these new drugs with conventional dieting.

Researchers note that people who shed pounds through dieting typically experience a slower creep back—perhaps 100 grams monthly—post-intervention.

The Reason for the Rapid Regain

Doctors propose the mode of action of the injections is key to understanding the accelerated regain.

GLP-1 drugs imitate a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which moderates hunger.

"Long-term administration of GLP-1 levels several times higher than normal could lead to the system to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous hormone, and could diminish responsiveness to its effects," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics expert.

"Discontinuation of this medication results in hunger is uncontrolled, making overeating far more likely."

An Ongoing Condition?

The NHS advise the jabs for individuals with obesity-related medical conditions, alongside prescribed lifestyle changes.

Professionals contend that, considering the significant potential of relapse, the therapy is often life-long.

This perspective is reinforced by drug manufacturers, who note that the findings "underscore the long-term nature of obesity," comparing it to managing diseases like diabetes.

Patient Testimonies

People who have stopped the jabs explain a intense return of cravings.

"It was like a switch flipping and you become ravenous," said one woman.

This difficulty is compounded if patients have not developed permanent lifestyle or habit changes during treatment.

Growing Adoption

Survey data indicate that millions of adults in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the past year, with demand remaining high.

  • Adoption is greater among females than men.
  • The middle-aged age group shows the greatest level of interest.
  • A large proportion obtain the medications through private healthcare rather than public health services.

Ultimately, experts stress that while these medications are effective tools for weight loss, they are not a permanent cure and long-term success likely depends on integrated lifestyle management.
