The network's Top Fresh Series of This Year Secures a Major Renewal for Two More Seasons.

During the fall season, Adult Swim debuted a new season of its unconventional hit, Smiling Friends. But, later that same month, the network introduced a completely new animated series with a distinctly unique feel. Haha, You Clowns emerged as gentle and comforting, evoking a cartoon version of a serene talk show. At a time often characterized by cynicism, this show's earnestness struck a chord and helped it become a breakout hit.

A Two-Season Greenlight

On December 18th, Adult Swim revealed exciting news: Haha, You Clowns has been picked up for two more seasons. This gives showrunner Joe Cappa a massive runway to expand upon the story of the Campbell family. The show centers on three respectful teenage brothers whose primary trait is their profound affection for their single father, with Cappa providing the voices for all four main characters.

"My deepest thanks go to the viewers of the show who welcomed the series and spread the word," remarked Cappa. "I am overjoyed that I get to spend more time in the Campbell household for a little longer."

Executive Acclaim

The official statement also included laudits from Adult Swim president Michael Ouweleen, who described the series as "profoundly sincere and strangely uncanny." He thanked the fans who discovered the show and championed its peculiarly charming appeal.

"All of you got behind this new show, rooted for it on social media, and helped it grow week over week so we could greenlight not one, but two more seasons," commented Ouweleen. "To quote: 'You are strong! You are loved!'"

A Different Kind of Comedy

Earlier this fall, Haha, You Clowns was described as "a comforting antidote" to more cynical adult animated fare. Viewers found something unexpectedly cozy about following this lovable family go about their daily lives.

Previously, creator Joe Cappa shared his goal to help comedy break out of its prevailing cynical streak. He attributed this trend to the rise of certain blockbuster franchises.

“There's this level of irony that we can't get ourselves out of,” said Cappa. “The attitude is that we have to know we’re the smartest person in the room when we're watching stuff. I feel like we've been doing this for a decade, and we need to laugh at something different now. It's time for comedy to grow.”

What Comes Next

With this renewal, with Haha, You Clowns set to continue, Cappa may well catalyze that very evolution. Or at the very least, the renewal ensures audiences additional episodes to enjoy the heartfelt moments of the beloved Campbell clan.

The season 1 finale of Haha, You Clowns is scheduled to air on December 21st. All episodes is ready to watch on HBO Max.
