It might not have been at the equivalent scale as sparing Thanksgiving turkeys, but the county's top official conducted a presidential-style act this week by ceremoniously saving the life of a pig named Six Seven. Daniella Levine Cava performed the seasonal stunt at the Cuban-style Latin Cafe 2000 in the center of Miami’s iconic Little Havana neighborhood. “This pig is innocent. She is worthy of this pardon. No offenses are on her docket,” declared Levine Cava in a speech with clear references to the extraordinary and sizable number of pardons issued since the beginning of a current administration. “Unless you count eating half a dozen apples per day,” she went on. “May this pig enjoy a lengthy and joyful existence free from concern.” The gathering, which both honors and questions the region’s Hispanic tradition of feasting on pork during the holidays, was created to mirror the traditional fowl clemency at the White House. The swine, donated by a Coral Gables firefighter, was named for the popular vernacular phrase of young people shouting “6-7” – originating from a musical verse – often without clear purpose. The trend became so ubiquitous that a prominent word reference recently named “six-seven” its top term for the year. A New Life The pardoned swine is now destined to live out its days at a farm sanctuary “distant from barbecues and spits”, according to the event’s official press release. “The pig pardon has become a cherished method to kick off the end-of-year celebrations,” said Eric Castellanos, in a decidedly positive message. “It embodies the essence of Miami: joyful, multicultural, and rooted in traditions that bring people together. Every time, we are honored to observe culture and compassion in a way unique to Miami.” Guests enjoyed a plant-based fare of spinach fritters and strong coffee as they marked the pig's pardon.
